Choose Your Battles: Tech Repairs I Gladly Skip.
Tech repairs, I love a good challenge—but there are some jobs I’d rather leave to others. Here’s a lighthearted rundown of the tech tasks that might just be a little too much for me (or my sanity) to handle.
Apple iMac & MacBook Repairs: The Forbidden Fruit
Yes, I own an iMac, but my true expertise lies in the world of Microsoft Windows desktops and laptops. Apple devices, while sleek and stylish, are notorious for being tricky to crack open—sometimes literally! The thought of potentially shattering a screen just to get to a stubborn internal component is enough to make me break out in a cold sweat. Plus, Apple parts are like gold: expensive, elusive, and always in short supply. So, unless you want to see me sweat, it’s best to take your Apple products to a certified Apple guru.
Tablet & Phone Hardware Repairs: My Kryptonite
Tiny components and my not-so-tiny fingers just don’t get along. After an unfortunate tendon injury in 2010, I’m afraid my right hand’s dexterity isn’t quite what it used to be. While the surgery was successful, my days of tinkering with delicate tablet and phone innards are behind me. Trust me, you don’t want to see me trying to play Operation with your tablet’s innards—it won’t end well.
Circuit Board Level Repairs: The Small Stuff that Scares Me
Working at the circuit board level with large hands and fat fingers is like trying to paint a masterpiece with a paint roller—it’s just not gonna happen. My hands are built for handling robust hardware, not for dealing with teeny-tiny electronic components. I’ll leave those minuscule tasks to those with the patience of a saint and the hands of a surgeon. I prefer my work with bigger parts where I’m less likely to, well, mess things up!
Printer Hardware Issues: The Ink-Credible Mess
Printers are the bane of many techs’ existence, and I’m no exception. If you are encountering continuous paper jams, poor quality printing due to clogged inkjets that no amount of cleaning can fix then it may be a hardware issue. Printer hardware repairs are notorious for needing manufacturer-specific parts that are either impossible to find or crazily overpriced. Add in the messy reality of ink and toner, and it’s a recipe for disaster. In most cases, it’s best to send your printer woes directly to the manufacturer’s printer service team—trust me, your carpet will thank you!

Gaming PC Desktops and Laptops: A Hardcore Pass (Literally)
Confession time: I’ve never been a gamer. Gaming rigs are like the muscle cars of the PC world—always pushed to their limits and prone to overheating. Troubleshooting these beasts is a time-consuming, resource-draining affair, often resulting in a hefty bill that could buy you a whole new machine. As a sole trader with limited time and resources, I prefer to focus on repairs that won’t require multiple trips to your house or result in hours of troubleshooting obscure game issues. Besides, I’m pretty sure gaming is an expensive hobby without my help!
Screen Repairs on Laptops or Desktops: A Shattered Dream
Once upon a time, I dabbled in screen repairs, but after encountering a flood of low-quality replacements from the East, I decided to hang up my screen-repair hat. The risk of installing a subpar screen—or worse, one that poses a fire hazard—isn’t worth it. And with original manufacturer screens costing a small fortune, the whole endeavor becomes a lose-lose situation for both me and the client.
Hardware Repairs with Model-Specific Parts: The Needle in a Haystack
Some laptops are so specific in their design that finding the right replacement part feels like a quest for the Holy Grail. When it comes to these make-and-model-specific repairs, the time and effort required to track down the right component can often outweigh the cost of simply replacing the device. In these cases, I advise against repairs that aren’t cost-effective for the client.
Tech Repairs Where the Repair Isn’t Worth the Cost: The Harsh Truth
I’m all about providing value, and sometimes, that means being honest about when a repair just isn’t worth it. If the cost of fixing your device exceeds its value or could buy you a shiny new upgrade or refurbished machine, I’ll be the first to tell you. After all, I’m here to help you get the most bang for your buck, not drain your wallet on a lost cause.
So, if your device troubles fall into one of these categories, it’s probably something I’ll gracefully sidestep. But don’t worry—I’m still here to help you navigate your tech woes, even if it’s just to point you in the direction of someone brave enough to tackle them!
